About the painting

Krishna, painted blue, stands at the centre of a great circle. Around him, each gopi sits in her own lotus-petal panel, and the whole wheel is set inside patterned borders, so no part of the paper is left empty.

In Mithila, Krishna's leela, his play with the gopis, stands for the joy of devotion: the soul drawn towards the divine. It is one of the best-loved subjects in Madhubani painting and is often chosen for homes and puja rooms.
