About the painting

Kachni means line work. Instead of blocks of colour, the fish is built from thousands of fine black lines: hatching, dots and small repeated shapes inside every scale and fin, with touches of red.

The fish is the most common motif in Mithila painting. It appears on wedding walls, on gifts and on doorways as a sign of prosperity and fertility.
